Caitlin Skow Is February DAISY Award Winner

Caitlin Skow, RN, a nurse from the Progressive Care Unit at Methodist Hospital, was honored at a recognition ceremony on Wednesday, February 11, as the February DAISY award winner for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women's Hospital. Caitlin is currently enrolled in the RN to MSN program at Nebraska Methodist College.

Caitlin was nominated for the honor by a patient's wife, who praised Caitlin for "the gentle, compassionate care she has given my husband, the genuine empathy and concern she has shown us, and her sincere interest in doing everything possible to alleviate his pain and discomfort -- creatively thinking outside the box to do so -- all the hallmarks of a truly gifted nurse."

The wife described how Caitlin successfully repurposed a lung pillow as a cushion to alleviate pain on a pressure ulcer and coaxed her reluctant patient to use the recommended pain medication regimen to ease his discomfort.

"Caitlin always found a way to lighten the burden of a long, frustrating hospital stay. Her friendly smile and genuine kindness brightened our difficult days," the wife wrote. "We were blessed to have had such a wonderful nurse!"

The DAISY Award is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary skill and compassionate care given by nurses every day. Nurses can be nominated by anyone, including patients, family members, physicians, supervisors or their peers.
