Andy Sass Is April DAISY Award Winner

Andy Sass, BSN, RN, from the Methodist Hospital Acute Care for Elders unit, was honored at a recognition ceremony on Monday, April 4, as the April DAISY Award winner for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women's Hospital.

He was nominated for the honor by fellow team members who described him as "an extraordinary RN" and "The Meaning of Care."

Andy is known and admired for going above and beyond to provide the best care not only for his own patients, but for all of the unit's patients. 

A nominator wrote, "He never walks by a call light without stopping in the patient's room to see how he can assist them. His bright smile and calm nature are welcoming to all patients and visitors on the floor."

He is recognized as a positive role model and strong asset for the team.

"Other nurses on the unit consider Andy a great resource, and they come to him when they need assistance or have technical questions. When Andy is working, the floor always runs smoothly. Andy also participates in the unit-based council, as well as other organizations and committees to promote a better work environment and better care and safety for our patients."

Recently, Andy was among the first to respond when a patient was choking on a bite of food. The patient's family, in the room at the time of the emergency, saw Andy quickly perform the Heimlich maneuver to save their loved one's life.

"For this alone, I believe Andy deserves the Daisy Award," one of the nominators wrote, "but he truly goes above and beyond every day to make our unit, hospital and everyone's lives he touches better."
