Earth Day: How to get involved all month with activities across Methodist

Published: April 9, 2024
Sustainability

In celebration of Earth Day on April 22, Methodist Health System is showcasing its commitment to sustainability with activities in April that highlight our theme: “Reduce, Reuse and Then Recycle.”

Here’s how you can get involved at any Methodist location:

  • Enter in our “Snap to Save” photo challenge, open April 8-26, for a chance to win one of two household memberships to Fontenelle Forest. To participate, click here and add a photo showcasing how you reduce your waste.
  • Attend a speaking event April 25 in person at the 825 Building or virtually via teams with Leigh Neary from Exist Green. Neary will focus on the role that stores like Exist Green can play in waste minimization and the mindset shift away from consumerism and toward reuse. The meeting is at 1 p.m. in room 209. Click here to join the Teams meeting.
  • Enjoy a brewed coffee discount. Bring a reusable mug with you for $1 brewed coffee. This does not include mugs larger than 24 ounces or specialty coffees (lattes, etc). This new offer will help us reduce the number of single-use cups that enter the waste stream.

Methodist Women’s Hospital: On April 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafe, SALT chairs will host a variety of educational opportunities and giveaways. Attendees will learn about composting, native landscaping and recent sustainability successes.

Nebraska Methodist College (NMC): A full month worth of programming includes:

  • A campus cleanup event on April 22
  • Meatless menus in Deja Brew on Wednesdays
  • Informative booths in the Clark Lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 9 (NMC SALT) and April 16 (City Sprouts and the NMC community garden)

825 Building: A donation drive for coffee mugs and unused silverware will reduce the amount of single-use flatware used in the 825 Café. Employees are encouraged to find new use for items they already have – not purchase anything new. Donation items can be brought to the kitchenette closest to you and placed in the shelves and drawers. Any excess items can be stacked on the counter and will be repurposed throughout the building or donated at the end of April.
