The monthly Making a Difference Award honors a preceptor who makes an impact on a new nurse training at Methodist Hospital or Methodist Women’s Hospital. While completing an evaluation of their preceptor, each new nurse has the opportunity to submit a nomination for the Making a Difference Award.

The award was inspired by the tale of the starfish, which emphasizes how even one simple act can make a difference for someone else.

Emily Hernandez, BSN, RN, a registered nurse on the Medical-Surgical Unit at Methodist Hospital, was honored with the Making a Difference Award for April 2024. She was nominated by new nurse Laine Stark, who wrote:

“Emily was great at ensuring I was meeting my weekly goals. She was thorough and organized, providing frequent and consistent feedback on charting, patient care and time management. Emily asked me a lot of questions instead of telling me what to do; this helped me develop critical thinking. Emily let me be hands on, which was encouraging and supportive. She frequently let me know I was doing a good job!”

Congratulations, Emily! Your foundation of clinical excellence, teaching methods, enthusiasm, encouragement and support made a difference. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to training new Methodist nurses!
