The monthly Making a Difference Award honors a preceptor who makes an impact on a new nurse training at Methodist Hospital or Methodist Women’s Hospital. While completing an evaluation of their preceptor, each new nurse has the opportunity to submit a nomination for the Making a Difference Award.

The award was inspired by the tale of the starfish, which emphasizes how even one simple act can make a difference for someone else.

Lisa Holmstedt, BSN, RN, a registered nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Methodist Women's Hospital, was honored with the Making a Difference Award for July 2024. She was nominated by a new nurse, who wrote:

“Lisa was an excellent role model to learn from! ... She would call me over even on days I wasn’t assigned to her to show me how to do things. If another nurse on the unit had a patient who needed something I hadn’t experienced, Lisa would arrange for me to go see it! I was able to take advantage of every new learning opportunity, which was very helpful. Lisa was patient, encouraging and reassuring. When receiving report, Lisa would make sure the nurse would acknowledge me by turning toward me and giving ME report. Lisa was all about how she could help ME learn. She was an amazing preceptor and a thoughtful nurse.”

Congratulations, Lisa! Your foundation of clinical excellence, teaching methods, enthusiasm, encouragement and support made a difference. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to training new Methodist nurses!
