The monthly Making a Difference Award honors a preceptor who makes an impact on a new nurse or nursing assistant training at Methodist Hospital or Methodist Women’s Hospital. While completing an evaluation of their preceptor, each new nurse and nursing assistant has the opportunity to submit a nomination for the Making a Difference Award.

The award was inspired by the tale of the starfish, which emphasizes how even one simple act can make a difference for someone else.

Terra Townsend, a nursing assistant in the Ortho/Neuro Unit at Methodist Hospital, was honored with the Making a Difference Award for September 2024. She was nominated by a new nursing assistant, who wrote:

“Terra was knowledgeable and efficient with everything that she did. She went above and beyond with my training to make sure that I understood everything. She was so patient when I asked questions or needed additional explanation on something. Terra was supportive and made sure I was comfortable and confident in what I was doing, and she always included me and introduced me to everyone. She made me not feel awkward about being the new person! Even on my first shift by myself, she made sure I knew I could still come to her and ask any questions if needed. I cannot express how grateful I am that I got to have Terra be my preceptor. She is amazing! Everyone should train with Terra. She is the best!"

Congratulations, Terra! Your foundation of clinical excellence, teaching methods, enthusiasm, encouragement and support made a difference. Thank you for your commitment and dedication to training new Methodist nurses and nursing assistants!
