Nov. 1-5 Is Patient Blood Management Awareness Week

The Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management (SABM) is celebrating Patient Blood Management (PBM) Awareness Week this year from Nov. 1 to 5. 

Methodist Hospital's Blood Conservation Program was established in 2007 as a comprehensive, evidenced-based medical and surgical approach to patient care that strives to reduce or eliminate the need for a blood transfusion in a patient's care. By working as a team, doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other hospital staff members use techniques and equipment to reduce blood loss, retain a patient's own blood during treatment and, if needed, maximize a patient's own blood production.  

Medical journal articles on PBM can be found in Anesthesia & Analgesia, JAMA, STS News, Transfusion, and Transfusion and Apheresis Science.
 
Professional organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB), SABM, The Joint Commission and the World Health Organization (WHO) also have information dealing with this subject.

PBM programs also exist at the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, the University of Iowa and other facilities.
