Free Course Offering: Communicating Effectively With Limited English-Proficient Patients
Published: June 14, 2022Methodist's compliance department has partnered with Nebraska Methodist College's professional development team to offer a free online course: Communicating Effectively With Limited English-Proficient Patients.
This course was offered during the first week of May, when the MARTTI and Compliance teams were visiting sites throughout the health system. Now, it's available on demand.
Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) and patients who are deaf or hard of hearing face health disparities that produce inequitable outcomes. Recognizing a patient’s cultural and linguistic needs is essential to providing equitable care and the best possible patient experience. The course will review the barriers that LEP and deaf or hard of hearing patients face with health care, risks associated with not meeting cultural and linguistic needs, best practices for ensuring effective communication, and responsibilities of health care providers.
Registration is free and open to anyone. As a bonus, the course has been approved for credits toward continuing education requirements.
