Eat, Sleep, Console Program at MWH

Methodist Women’s Hospital has gone live with the Eat, Sleep, Console care model for our neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) or neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS) newborn population. This new care model has Mom and/or caregivers as the first line of treatment by focusing on holding/comforting, feeding and calming the environment. Eat, Sleep, Console assesses the newborns ability to function. When the newborn does not meet one of the measures a huddle is called to evaluate all non-pharmacological interventions are being optimized. A huddle includes the mom/caregiver, bedside nurse and department Core nurse. If all non-pharmacological interventions are optimized and newborn still does not meeting all measures the nurse will call Newborn Provider and the decision to give a small pre-determined morphine dose will be made. No additional assessments are needed for this small dose.

As of October 1st WH has not had a true NAS/NOWS newborns needing the Eat, Sleep, Console care model. WH has utilized the Eat Sleep Console care model for newborns exposed to Kratom and SSRIs. Newborns experiencing withdrawal symptoms from other substances, like Kratom and SSRIs, will be comforted and assessed using the Eat, Sleep, Console care model minus the use of morphine.
